History:
Jonathan and Nathaniel Thayer born to a clergyman in Lancaster Massachusetts made their fortune in Boston’s banking industry in the early 1800’s. In 1874 the brothers commissioned architect Richard Upjohn, to design and construct twin townhouses on the lot at 70-72 Mount Vernon Street. The matching townhouses are adjoined on the south side of the to a the Gothic limestone building at 27 Chestnut Street, which was erected in 1918 for Boston University’s School of Theology. When the Thayer brothers died, their homes at 70 and 72 Mount Vernon were left to the theological school. In 1965, Bullerjahn Associates purchased the buildings and converted them into the dramatic and luxurious condominiums they are today.
